GOOD DOCS is a US-based documentary distributor with an award-winning collection of films designed to engage and inspire students by featuring rarely heard stories about individuals and communities working towards a more equitable world. It is part of the Global Sage Learning Resources portfolio of products at Sage. In the role, this person will have responsibility for leading a team of three staff in client relations, customer service and marketing functions (with support from Sage Library Marketing); leading all aspects of the Editorial and licensing strategy for adding new films to the collection, speaker events and impact events; supporting film onboarding and curation; and providing dedicated filmmaker and customer support as required. They will also be required to represent Sage/GOOD DOCS in the documentary film and educational film community, including attending film festivals, conferences, and other networking events. Essential job functions and responsibilities: Strategy Working collaboratively with the Senior Director and other departments across Sage, you will be responsible for GOOD DOCS strategic development and implementation. This includes: Strengthening and growing our three core GOOD DOCS programs: GOOD DOCS film sales, the expansion of our GOOD TALKS speaker programs, and the development of our Impact Projects In partnership with other Visual Media colleagues, developing new product proposals for approval for the Sage Video Documentaries collections series Leading all GOOD DOCS product review and sessions as needed Analyzing internal and competitor data to interpret Sage/GOOD DOCS market position and adapt strategy on an ongoing basis Coordinating market research plans with Sage’s Senior Market Research Analyst Editorial and Licensing Being the lead on new film title acquisition and licensing as they fit with the strategy of Sage/GOOD DOCS, responding to and evaluating new film submissions in a timely fashion, but also proactively seeking new films for licensing from the wider documentary filmmaking community. Working with other GOOD DOCS staff, being the lead on negotiating distribution contracts, ensuring rights and terms are favorable to Sage/GOOD DOCS. Fostering positive relationships with potential filmmakers and film production companies to build a positive network and pipeline of new film titles. Moving titles effectively through the workflow from acceptance to acquisition and signing by working directly with filmmakers and the GOOD DOCS team. Monitoring the onboarding process for new films to ensure the team has these ready for distribution as efficiently and quickly as possible Team Management and Leadership Overseeing the GOOD DOCS staff required to achieve the strategic goals of GOOD DOCS films, speaker series and impact events Overseeing other daily operations including managing team meetings, budgets, and day-to-day marketing and outreach activities. Troubleshooting and solving problems, responding to market trends and filmmaker needs Evaluating resourcing needs to achieve objectives Translating resourcing needs into appropriate budgets and monitoring those budgets Setting and monitoring the achievement of staff objectives Continuous performance feedback and career development for staff Recommending salaries, promotions, and structural changes to the Senior Director Sage/GOOD DOCS Ambassador Building trust and encouraging long-term relationships with filmmakers, educators, librarians, and film professionals, as well as engaging with collaborators, customers, and team members in the documentary, educational, and funding communities. Representing Sage/GOOD DOCS at film festivals, events, and conferences Staying informed about industry trends by keeping tabs on the latest developments in film distribution, marketing, and the wider media landscape. Education, Skills, Experience And Qualification Guidelines At least 4-5 years of Editorial/Licensing experience in a documentary film distribution company, or able to demonstrate equivalent experience, such as film selection and curation experience, either with a film festival or some kind of programming expertise. Demonstrated success in curating educational films/documentaries and in leading all aspects of an extensive outreach and sales pipeline. Having knowledge of academia and/or higher education pedagogy, working with curriculum, educators/librarians would be beneficial Ability to develop, communicate, and implement strategic plans, gaining agreement from key customers. Proven experience as a people manager; able to demonstrate effective one-to-one as well as team management. Exhibited reasoning skills and analytical proficiency, with the ability to make sound business decisions and design driven strategies based on financial metrics, market knowledge, and industry trends. Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to establish collaborative working relationships. Highly effective delegation skills and the ability to cascade information appropriately. Flexibility of thought and creativity to resolve complex problems, with the ability to drive new initiatives and apply outstanding problem-solving skills to act and lead through change Some experience in film marketing and branding, including the use of design tools (e.g., Canva) would be an asset, but is not crucial A confirmed commitment to human rights, the ability to hold multiple perspectives, nuance, and lifting up different perspectives Proficient use of the MS Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook); and able to learn several internal IT systems.
